Introduction

At a time when environmental protection and water management issues are front page news, as a responsible corporation EYATH S.A. is engaged in daily endeavours to safeguard the environment and manage water better.

The company runs two wastewater treatment facilities:

  • The Thessaloniki Wastewater Treatment Facility located in Sindos receives 150,000 – 160,000 m3 of wastewater a day, while full capacity is around 296,000 m3/d.
  • The Aeneia Wastewater Treatment Facility located in Nea Michaniona capable to treating a population equivalent of 33,000 in the winter and 87,000 in the summer. It covers Thessaloniki’s tourist areas thanks to its connection to the sewerage network, and receives around 8,000 m3 of wastewater a day, around 1,500 m3 of which is septic tank waste.

EYATH S.A. ensures that treated wastewater is fed into the Thermaikos Bay, which is a sensitive body of water, in accordance with the applicable environmental terms and conditions. The company’s primary goal is to collect urban wastewater from its entire territory (98%) and treat 92-96% of it at organic load values, 365 days a year, 24 hours a day. The cleaned waste is then disposed off in the centre of the bay, thereby decongesting the gulf of Thessaloniki.

Research is also being conducted to examine whether wastewater which has undergone biological treatment can be used to irrigate crops and artificially recharge aquifers.
